The keto diet involves eating fewer carbohydrates, replacing them with high fat foods. Studies have found that the plan is highly effective for weight loss as well as helping to prevent other diseases. James Warren, 26, from Nottingham decided to follow the diet plan after he realised his weight started to “balloon”.
“Some days I enjoy bacon, sausage, half a tomato and scrambled eggs for breakfast, while other days I’ll have some keto granola and natural yoghurt.”
Bacon and sausage are considered to be ketogenic because they are high in fat while being low in carb.
Bacon also contains about 50 percent monounsaturated fats, with a large part of those being oleic acid, which can help reduce fat around the abdomen.
“Dinner is always very varied and I’ve recently begun experimenting with keto variants of favourites like chicken Kievs which are coated in milled linseed and my personal favourite, homemade keto pasta dough which I make using vital wheat gluten, oat fibre, eggs and olive oil.”
Other ketogenic foods include seafood, cheese, avocados, nuts and berries.
Dark chocolate is also allowed on the diet in small amounts as is a great source of antioxidants.
In fact, according to Healthline, cocoa provides at least as much antioxidant activity as any other fruit, including blueberries.
James added: “Lunch varies from chicken salads or homemade soup, or on the days where I’m too full from breakfast, I’ll have a boiled egg or some salami and diced veg.
James went on: “I had previously always set unrealistic targets which often led to me failing to hit my goals.
“So I set a goal of 19st, which was a weight loss of two stone, and then decided to review it when I got to that goal.
“I got down to my goal in just five weeks and then set one stone targets every four weeks before reaching what I now call my ‘satisfied weight’ of 15st 3lbs, totalling a weight loss of 6st 3lbs.
“I now follow a keto diet full-time which allows me to maintain my weight and enjoy the benefits of more energy, better sleep and lower cholesterol and blood pressure.”
Reducing cholesterol and blood pressure is vital in leading a healthy lifestyle.
